Shared Vocabulary

In order for MBE science to continue to grow successfully, several challenges will have to be overcome. Among the most pressing challenges is that of developing a vocabulary that is common to all participants in the discipline and that includes a clear definition of all of the terms in the lexicon, with the goal of improving communication processes between the different parent disciplines.

An example of the difficulty in creating a unifying vocabulary was seen when the Delphi panel of experts was asked to select important words for the discipline, and to begin by defining the word learning (2008). The Delphi panel began by asking experts to modify a one-sentence definition of the word learning, which eventually grew into a 166-word treatise:
